THE DISTRIBUTION OF OPPORTUNITIES
SECRET QUOTAS of the ADMISSION
PEAK at the 2017, a coalition of 64 Asian- American groups has filled a complaint against HARVARD for discriminating against Asian-American kids in admission. The conflict between the applicators and the school admission rate reflect a bias about race, and in fact, it is not only questioning about the avoidance toward Asian- American students, but it is discriminating in favor of Black and Hispanic.According to the complaint filled with the U.S Department of Education Office's for Civil Rights, revealed that the SAT/ACT requires Asian-American students to gain 140 points higher than white, 270 higher than Hispanic, and 450 higher than African-American students.
In addition, from a freshman studied in Montana High School, Cuppertino, in which the rate of Asian American residence is high, he alleged that when he applied for famous school as UCLA and BERKELEY, they rejected his application by another African-American kids who has a lower GPA and SAT scores than him, which forced him to alter his future academic plan and moved to Boston private school.
Even though, the school lawsuit swam around this issues by claiming that the top schools are not just looking for "smart" kids with high SAT scores and perfect applications, what they want is to "balance" out the opportunities to all "kind" of students, despite of race, but their talents and special background. However, their excuses still do not satisfy with the disappointment from the Asian-American kids and their parents.
Responding to the decisions from school, the Asian-American kids can only think about the reason why they got reject even though how much effort they put in through their entire time, is that there are so many excellent and perfect students like them, especially Asian among each other. Thus, the schools have to increase the challenging to distinguish the better one among the elite one. And these Asian kids have to compete intensely and put twice the effort to able to get to the school they dream. While, the admission seems to be more favor in kids who just have enough score but they can play sport well. Is it a disadvantage to kids who only have an average physical status?
That explains why the admission is not fair is because what make the school become top is not only about academic, but also over the athletic achievement, social and cultural backgrounds that makes the differences. Although, it will not meet the agreement from the other side.
The outcome of this issue is very clear, it will vanish the value of the admission and trusts from the young students, also it might cause the implicit envy between the students with different races and backgrounds. With this unfair system, many potential students will be push aside. And more important than ever, this reflecting the chaos inside the American Education
